The first session is mostly about getting to know you—what brings you in, what you’d like to work on, and what you hope to get out of therapy. We’ll talk about your background, your goals, and what’s been getting in the way. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and see if it feels like a good fit.
Other psychologists may find this to be a radical idea (I don't!): Your job is to fire me--to get to a place in our work together where my companionship is no longer needed. This means I lean on the science and take a time-limited approach to services. No one should be in therapy for life!
The specific amount of time we spend together depends on your goals and what you’d like to work on. Some people come regularly for a few months to focus on specific interventions for specific concerns, while others may choose to continue for a bit longer for ongoing support around complex problems or deeper personal growth. EIther way, we'll once again use science to track progress on goals and we’ll check in regularly about whether our collaboration is meeting your needs.
Most people start with weekly sessions to build consistency and momentum. Over time, we may decide to meet less often as you start to feel more confident using what you’ve learned between sessions. Either way, the goal is for you to eventually continue your own journey without my expert companionship.
ABSOLUTELY! These are those "Vegas rules." Whatever you share in therapy stays private, with a few exceptions required by law (for example, if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others). We’ll go over confidentiality in detail during your first session so you know exactly what to expect.
Yes. I currently exclusively offer online telehealth services. However, depending on your location and need, we may be able to have sessions in the community to support your goals.
I charge $200 per 50-minute session. BUT, here's the kicker (and again, perhaps a bit radical to some psychologists): Since I do evidence-based therapy, which is known to be effective for MOST people who are able to stick with it, I offer a 20% rebate for those who complete a full "dose" (usually a set-number of sessions depending on the therapy). Like an antibiotic in medicine, a partial dose is almost always ineffective and unlikely to produce the desired outcomes.
